It is the lamps or the circuit, not C-Bus

Not every lighting fault in a C-Bus house is a C-Bus fault. When some lights in a group work and others do not, or lights flicker and buzz rather than failing cleanly, the most likely culprit is the lamps themselves.

Most likely cause

The lamps, drivers or the circuit are at fault rather than the control system. Most often this is modern LED lamps fitted to dimmers that were designed for halogen.

The most common version of this by a wide margin

A C-Bus house built in the 2000s was lit with halogen downlights. Over the years those get replaced with LED lamps, usually a few at a time as they fail, and usually by whoever was cheapest. The dimmers on the rail were engineered for a different kind of load, and the mismatch produces a recognisable set of symptoms.

Why it gets misdiagnosed as a system failure

Because it presents at the switch. You press a key, the lights misbehave, and the obvious conclusion is that the expensive automation system has developed a fault. Meanwhile the C-Bus network is working perfectly and faithfully sending a dim command to a lamp that cannot honour it. It is worth ruling out first precisely because it is free to check and because the alternative diagnosis is a module replacement.

What to check, at no cost

Ask one question: did this start after someone changed lamps? If the answer is yes, or you do not know but the lamps are LED and the house is from the halogen era, that is your lead. Note which lights are affected and what type of lamp is in them. Then check whether the affected lamps are all on the same circuit or scattered across several: scattered points at the lamps, a whole circuit points back at the module.

This one is mains work. Stop here and book a licensed electrician. Switchboards, DIN-rail power supplies, dimmer and relay modules, and anything behind a faceplate are all live electrical work. There is no safe DIY version of this check.

Ask for an electrician with C-Bus accreditation if you can get one. A general electrician can safely isolate, test and replace hardware, but most cannot program the system afterwards, which is the half that makes your lights behave again.

How it gets fixed

Change the lamps
Fitting lamps that are compatible with the existing dimmer is often the cheapest answer, and it needs no work on the system at all.
Change the dimmer
Replacing the module with a current unit designed for LED loads. More expensive, but it future-proofs the circuit and usually improves the dimming range.
Move the circuit
Some circuits are better run as simple on and off from a relay channel rather than dimmed. If you do not dim that room anyway, this is free capability you already own.
Adjust the programming
Setting a minimum level or a different dimming curve for that channel can rescue a marginal combination without new hardware.
