What replacing C-Bus really costs
We do not publish figures for this, and you should be sceptical of anyone who does. What we can give you is the structure of the cost, which is more useful, because it lets you read a quote and see what you are actually being charged for.
Why no numbers
Because the honest range is so wide that a figure would mislead you. The cost of putting a C-Bus house right depends on how many units are involved, what has actually failed, whether the project file exists, how accessible the enclosure is, and whether you are in a city with local specialists or somewhere that involves travel. A number that ignores those is marketing rather than information. Any real quote comes after someone has seen your system, and you should treat a firm price offered before that with caution.
The four levels, cheapest first
- Programming only
- No parts, no electrician, no wall opened. Someone connects and changes the configuration. Scenes fixed, timers corrected, unwanted schedules removed. The cheapest useful thing you can buy, and it solves more complaints than owners expect.
- Programming plus recovery
- As above, but the project file has to be rebuilt by scanning the network and walking the house first. A one-off cost that makes every future job cheaper, because the next person starts from a file.
- Repair
- Replacing individual failed units: a switch, a dimmer, a power supply. Licensed electrical work plus the programming to commission the replacement. Scales with how many units are involved, not with the size of the house.
- Replacement
- Removing the C-Bus system and installing something else. The big one, and the one worth interrogating hardest.
What actually drives a replacement quote
Not the C-Bus hardware. The labour, and specifically the labour of working in a house whose walls are closed. A C-Bus house has centralised lighting circuits running back to enclosures, which is not how a conventional or wireless system expects to be wired. Replacing it means either rewiring back to a conventional arrangement, which means opening walls and ceilings, or installing a new system that can work with the existing centralised topology, which is a smaller job that fewer people quote for.
That second option is the one most owners never hear about, and it is worth asking for explicitly. The wiring in your walls is the expensive part of your lighting system, and it is agnostic about which brand of electronics sits on the ends of it.
The questions that expose a bad quote
- "What did you test to reach that conclusion?" A real diagnosis involves measuring the network and identifying specific failed units. "It is old" is not a test result.
- "Which specific units have failed?" A repair quote should name them. If a replacement quote cannot name a single confirmed failure, it is not addressing a fault.
- "What would the repair cost, as a comparison?" Anyone quoting replacement should be able to price the alternative. Refusing to is a tell.
- "Does the existing wiring get reused?" If yes, the job is much smaller than a full rewire and should be priced that way.
- "There are no files so it cannot be programmed." This is incorrect. Programming is recoverable by scanning the network. Somebody saying otherwise is describing their own limits.
When replacement genuinely is the right answer
It sometimes is, and pretending otherwise would be as dishonest as the rip-out quote. The honest cases: widespread confirmed failures across many modules rather than one or two; no support reachable in your region at any price; or a renovation that has the walls open anyway, where the marginal cost of changing systems collapses. Outside those, replacing a functioning wired system with wireless gear generally means paying money to trade down in reliability, and the comparison is laid out in should you keep C-Bus or switch.
Nothing on this page asks you to take anything apart. Every check here is done by looking, or by pressing buttons that are already on the outside of a wall plate. Opening the hinged door of your switchboard to see the breakers is normal and fine. Removing the panel behind them is not, and neither is unscrewing a wall plate or lifting the cover off an enclosure.
In Australia it is illegal to work on fixed wiring without an electrical licence, and the reason is not paperwork: the terminals behind a C-Bus wall plate can be sitting at mains voltage. Anything past the faceplate is a job for a licensed electrician, ideally one with C-Bus accreditation.
The cheapest move, honestly
Before spending anything substantial, get the system diagnosed and the project file recovered. That converts an unknown, unsupportable system into a documented one, usually costs a fraction of any replacement, and gives you a real basis for the decision. A significant number of houses that were quoted for a rip-out needed one module and an afternoon of programming. You cannot know which you are until someone competent has looked.
