What your C-Bus switch LEDs are telling you

The small indicator lights on a C-Bus wall plate are the most useful free diagnostic in the whole system. They tell you whether the switch is alive, and whether anything is listening to it.

Why they matter more than they look

A C-Bus wall switch is not a switch in the conventional sense. Pressing it does not connect power to a light. It sends a message onto a network, and a separate unit somewhere else in the building does the actual switching. That split is the whole reason C-Bus can do scenes and timers, and it is also why the indicator LEDs are so informative: they sit on the sending side of the conversation.

So the LEDs answer a question you otherwise could not answer without test equipment: is this switch powered, and is it being heard?

Nothing on this page asks you to take anything apart. Every check here is done by looking, or by pressing buttons that are already on the outside of a wall plate. Opening the hinged door of your switchboard to see the breakers is normal and fine. Removing the panel behind them is not, and neither is unscrewing a wall plate or lifting the cover off an enclosure.

In Australia it is illegal to work on fixed wiring without an electrical licence, and the reason is not paperwork: the terminals behind a C-Bus wall plate can be sitting at mains voltage. Anything past the faceplate is a job for a licensed electrician, ideally one with C-Bus accreditation.

What the indicator normally means when everything is fine

On most C-Bus keypads the indicator next to a key reflects the state of what that key controls: lit when the group is on, dim or off when it is off. That is why a working system gives you a small map of the house on every plate. It is also why an indicator stuck on while the light is plainly off is worth noticing: the system believes that circuit is on, which means the message got through and the output side did not act on it.

How to read them properly

Look in a dim room
Backlighting on twenty-year-old keypads is faint. In daylight a working plate can look completely dead. Check at night or with the room lights off before you conclude anything.
Compare with a known good plate
Walk to a switch you know works and look at it first, so you know what healthy looks like on your particular hardware. Different C-Bus ranges behave differently.
Press and hold, then release
Some keys are programmed to dim on a long press and toggle on a short one. A key that seems dead on a quick tap sometimes responds to a held press.
Note which keys, not just which plate
One dead key on a working plate is a different diagnosis from a whole dead plate. Write down which is which.

The one exception worth knowing

Indicator behaviour is itself programmable. An installer can set a key's indicator to always on as a locator light in a dark hallway, always off, or to track something other than the group the key operates. It is uncommon, but it means a single strange indicator on an otherwise healthy system is not necessarily a fault. If everything works and one light just looks odd, it may simply have been set up that way.
